Esmeraldas, m̼sica e historia РRadio Feature (Spanish)

The story goes that in the middle of the 16th century a ship of slaves sank while passing through the coast of northern Ecuador. The survivors reached the coast and found their freedom in a new land, first fighting and then making alliances with the natives. The mixture of indigenous and black people created a new race. These people were the best at fighting and resisting the Spanish colonization in Ecuador.

This radio feature showcases the traditional music of Esmeraldas, a province in northern Ecuador, populated mostly by blacks. At the same time it tells the story of its people.

This feature is produced by Veronica Moscoso for La Raza Chronicles at KPFA 94.1 fm.
